Notes & Reviews:

Ján Cikker (1911 - 89) was one of the leading 20th c. Slovak composers, credited with no fewer than nine operas. This disc features several first recordings of his piano music, of which little is known even in his native Slovakia. The music sits downstream from Szymanowski and Janácek, like them blending folk influences with French impressionism echoes. As also with Szymanowski, some of the pieces evoke the composer's fondness for the Tatras, the mountainous borderland between Poland and Slovakia.

American Record Guide, January/February 2015
The disc is packed full (49 tracks) with a huge variety of music written over a period of 40 years (1933-73). There are eight main works, half of them first recordings. The stylistic influences on Cikker are an amalgam of Europeans from Chopin and Liszt to Debussy, Ravel, Scriabin, and Bartok. The opening Lullaby immediately brings to mind Chopin's Berceuse. There is a sonatina and two large sets of variations that account for over 30 minutes of the music here, and they give Palovicova ample opportunity to display her considerable pianistic and interpretive talents. The 15- movement What the Children Told Me: Piano Aquarelles is of a quality to be placed in a group with Schumann's masterpieces. Cikker's music deserves to be better known outside of his homeland. He fits in well with other Czech ancestors as well: Dvorak, Smetana, Suk, and Martinu all come to mind. This is a must for adventuresome listeners looking for almost unknown, high quality piano music from the 20th Century.
