Notes & Reviews:

American Record Guide, March/April 2015
This CD collects all of Stockhausen's percussion music from 1958 to 1964. Pride of place belongs to the two monumental works involving electronics: Kontakte (1958-1960) requires the pianist and percussionist to coordinate their actions precisely with each other and with a tape part that includes a universe of sonic possibility, while Mikrophonie (1964) calls for six players (the outstanding red fish blue fish) to activate a single large gong whose sounds are further modified on the spot by electronics. Kontakte, brilliantly performed by Avery and Schick. Schick also shines in the masterly performance of Zyklus and contributes the informative and absorbing liner notes. I should mention that the sound is superb (no surprise), and Mode's Brian Brandt took the extra step of making new transfers from the original four-channel tapes for Kontakte, to marvelous effect.
