Born in Ukraine in 1937, Nikolai Kapustin studied piano at the Moscow Conservatory and is a self-taught composer. His catalog of 154 compositions includes 20 piano sonatas, six piano concertos piano trios, string quartets and a significant number of chamber works.

The Trio Arbos is technically proficient and plays with fine tone. Trio 1 is a transcription of Kapustin's Trio for flute, cello, and piano. The others are premiere recordings.
