And it is. Pelmoine plays with a consummate technique, a fertile imagination, and a coloristic touch to rival Julian Bream. He uses metallic and it certainly is appropriate in this repertory. The more I listen to this performance, the more I hear in it - beautiful music in a varied, balanced, and satisfying program. One can't ask for more.

It is what it is
Olivier Pelmoine OPUS GUITAR Skarbo

Modern classical guitar music can be cballenging for performer and listener alike; aggressively dissonant harmonies and odd modal melodic turns, coupled with complex polyrhythms and a tendency to thump and bang on the sides and back of the instrument can leave those listeners accustomed to Giuliani or Rodrigo wondering what, exactly, is going on. The answer to that question requires an open mind and more than a little patience.
The composers chosen by Olivier Pelmoine for his new recording, “Opus Guitar”, write music that reflects the strident, cacophonous modern world in which they’re working, favoring an intentionally experimental tonal palette that can take getting used to.
Mr. Pelmoine has more than enough talent and technique to take on all of this difficult, complex, in-your-face music; his touch is precise and clear at even the fastest speeds.
“Opus Guitar” by Olivier Pelmoine will not appeal to everyone. Modernists will find it intriguing and well played, while more conservative/traditionalist listeners may be turned off (they’re advised to seek out his 2005 recording of Rodrigo, Regondi, etc. because this gentleman really can play the guitar.) As the hyperbolic liner notes phrase it, “Expect strong sensations and pure emotions, but also ordeals…” Passionate and committed, it is what it is.
