Rachmaninov: Études-tableaux Opp.33 & 39 / Nicholas Angelich, piano

Notes & Reviews:

MusicWeb International, 21st November 2014
Angelich demonstrates a firm understanding of these varied collections. His mellow tone is splendidly blended and he astutely characterises each work ... Angelich is particularly impressive is and very much alive to the varied moods of these works. He never overstates and avoids heaviness. These sessions were excellently recorded back in 1994.

In these pieces written by a composer soon to leave his homeland forever, there are two key elements: étude - a pianistic virtuosity rarely equaled - and tableau, a remarkable evocative power. The composer left only a few clues to the subjects that inspired him - a fair, the sea, a funeral march. But every listener can marvel at the mysterious and varied atmospheres of these miraculous miniatures, performed here with style and virtuosity by Nicholas Angelich.

BBC Music Magazine, October 2014
Rachmaninov's enigmatic studies are not the easiest nuts to crack, but Angelich's insightful colours have the measure of their limpid introspection and fantasy.
