Notes & Reviews:

Among the German avant-garde composers after the Second World War, Bernd Alois Zimmermann (1918-70) was the great outsider. Initially strongly influenced by the polyphonic currents of neo-Classicism and Expressionism, his own voluminous and daring characteristics quickly crystallized. It was only the premiere of his opera Die Soldaten that brought him broad and undisputed recognition. This first "Modern Times" CD release of lesser-known Zimmermann orchestral works features Karl-Heinz Steffens conducting the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz.

Gramophone Magazine, November 2014
[Photoptosis] is usually considered Zimmermann's defining work but never has it sounded so raw-boned and unrelenting: kudos to the Deutsche Staatsphilharmonie Rheinland-Pfalz and Karl-Heinz Steffens for pulling off such a chancy, intrepid performance.

The Guardian, 4th September 2014
The symphony is impressively taut and compact...Karl-Heinz Steffens's performance of Stille und Umkehr, Zimmermann's final orchestral work, reveals it to be a haunting and obsessive miniature masterpiece that is hard to forget.

American Record Guide, March/April 2015
The ballet suite Alagonia (c 1940-1950) was influenced by Stravinsky and Milhaud, especially the latter in its Brazilian subject matter. The Symphony in one movement (1947- 1952, rev. 1953) alternates passages of mystery with a sinister march. Photoptosis (1968), a prelude for large orchestra. Stille und Umkehr (Silence and Reversal, 1970) is Zimmermann's penultimate work. The annotator writes of "the expression of the hopelessness of Zimmermann's desolate emotional condition".
