Notes & Reviews:

Opera, January 2015
Fagoli [is]... the possessor of one of today's most complete vocal techniques... The support from De Marchi and his orchestra is first rate... anyone who loves great singing should hear the CD. It is a disc in a thousand, which deserves to garner awards galore.

The Guardian, 9th October 2014
Fagioli is an utterly beguiling interpreter, both in the big display pieces, where his vocal athleticism is staggering, and in slower, more intimate numbers...where both he and Porpora are at their most affecting...There's terrific playing, too, from the Academia Montis Regalis under Alessandro de Marchi.

Gramophone Magazine, December 2014
Fagioli sings with fulsome bravado and technical virtuosity...[and] regards Porpora's arias as a laboratory for learning.

Beautiful and powerful example of what a countertenor can do
Ever since discovering the countertenor voice type, I am always on the lookout for that can do justice to their repertoire. This recording is an excellent example of just what I am looking for.

Franco Fagioli has a beautiful voice with remarkable depth of feeling as well as a lovely top-end. According to the liner notes he has a three octave range, which is most certainly demonstrated on this recording. The music being performed consists of pieces written by Nicola Porpora (1686-1768) from operas that he composed during that time. Needless to say, the voice types being available at that time included soprano castrato, and it is a treat to hear someone as talented as Mr. Fagioli singing several of these wonderful works.

Particularly noteworthy are the two pieces from Semiramide Riconosciuta (tracks 2 and 4) which are both melodically pleasing both from the singing lovers prospective, but for the Baroque enthusiast, as the Academia Montis Regalis under the baton of Alessandro De Marchi gives Mr. Fagioli a delightful texture to work within. The music is exceptional. Also delightful is the lone piece from Didone Abbandonata (track 3) which requires Mr. Fagioli to use the top-end of his vocal range. And “spesso di nubi cinto” from “Carlo il Calvo” is energetic and hard not to tap your foot to.

The booklet containing liner notes in several languages is concise and informative, providing background on Porpora and Mr. Fagioli as well. While one might wish for even more information than that provided, it is certainly adequate. The performances are top-notch, and this recording has become a new bright star in my collection. Highly recommended.
