Notes & Reviews:

"Indeed, lesser mortals may well weep with envy at such unfaltering authority. She has done her one time mentor, Arthur Rubinstein, proud." - Gramophone The legendary Arthur Rubinstein called her "a born Chopin interpreter." Now, Janina Fialkowska returns with a two CD set devoted to the complete mazurkas of Frédéric Chopin. This recording by one of the world's great Chopin interpreters at the culmination of her long and celebrated career will be a milestone for music lovers, and especially for connoisseurs of Chopin's works. Beloved the world over for her exquisite pianism, Janina Fialkowska has enchanted audiences for over thirty years with her glorious lyricism, her sterling musicianship and her profound sense of musical integrity. Blending her vast experience with her refreshingly natural approach, "Fialkowska has become an artist of rare distinction as well as retaining all the virtuosity of her youth." (La Presse, Montréal)

BBC Music Magazine, February 2015
At her best, she is truly among the truly great. In this latest release her authority, imagination, pianistic command and stylistic flexibility are profoundly impressive...Texturally translucent, melodically compelling, formally gripping, expressively comprehensive - keeping all this in balance, without cost to the music's spontaneity and variety, is a major achievement.

Financial Times, 13th December 2014
[Fialkowska] says that in playing the mazurkas of Chopin she has been afforded "a glimpse of paradise" - in which case the other world must be for her a place of unvarnished beauty and simple truth...There is little searching for exaggerated effects in her playing, or even the reverential intimacy some pianists have favoured in recordings.

Gramophone Magazine, January 2015
Rubinstein, her longtime mentor, would have been the first to admire her unfailing musical honesty, her refreshing alternative to self-conscious sophistication...you will find an impressive blend of sense and sensibility from Fialkowska, who is well recorded and presented.

American Record Guide, January/February 2015
In her liner notes, Fialkowska explains that the mazurkas reveal "the feelings of this tragic genius". Her tone in Mazurka 13 is lovely and expressive, more color would convey the depth of feeling in these works. Her sensible tempos, elegant phrasing, and crystalline clarity are commendable and explain why her interpretations of romantic repertoire are highly regarded.

Reviews

Mazurkas of Chopin, beautifully and lovingly played
This 2 CD set consists of all 55 of the published Mazurkas of Chopin, played with feeling and an amazing sense of the humanity of the man by Janina Fialkowska who, as mentioned in the brief but informative liner notes, had her career launched by Arthur Rubenstein after prize-winning performances at the competition named after him in 1974.

The works are all arranged chronologically, falling into what are (and I agree with Ms. Fialkowska on this) essentially three periods: Chopins youth, his time with George Sand, and the time after his relationship with Ms. Sand was over. The early works are clearly nationalistic, conveying a strong sense of pride amidst the amazing melodies. But is the works in the middle period that consist of some of the music in which it seems that Chopin was the most free and could let his muse go these are some of the most beloved of Chopins pieces, and the sonic textures are brought forth masterfully by Ms. Fialkowska. The works of the post-Sand period are perhaps more forth-right, but with less of a sense of internal freedom, although it is clear that Chopin has much to say that we should pay attention to. His last Mazurka, in F minor, Op. 68, No. 4, published posthumously, is a work of warm melancholy that finishes with a definite feeling of this is who I am.

This is incredible music, performed with care and tenderness and masterful interpretive ability. I am pleased to have added it to my collection, and highly recommend it!
