Wihan Quartet: Smetana - String Quartets

Ensemble Composer

Notes & Reviews:

Although programmatic, Bedrich Smetana's string quartets do not deal with historical or social themes. Instead, they express the composer's subjective feelings through the medium of chamber music. The Wihan Quartet, formed in 1985 and still made up of the original four members, has developed an outstanding reputation for the interpretation of its native Czech repertoire as well as the many classical, romantic and modern masterpieces of the repertoire. Quartet 1 also gets an impressive treatment here. Again, it's the sort of performance that could only come from a mature group with a deep rapport. Their tempos are all quick and extremely flexible. In II, the group is always perfectly together. And it really swings! The Adagio gently and evenly rises and falls like slow, deep breathing. This is a must-have. I'll be returning to it often.
