American Record Guide, January/February 2015
The performance cannot be faulted. Alice Coote is splendid as the detective; and Paul Appleby, who looks a little too mature for a 16- year-old, sings very well as Brian. The large cast boasts several excellent performances in the many smaller roles, especially Jennifer Zetlan as Rebecca, Caitlyn Lynch and Maria Zifchak as the mothers of the two boys, Sandra Piques Eddy as Fiona, Keith Miller as Peter, and especially boy soprano Andrew Pulver as Jake (the other boy). The Metropolitan Opera chorus and orchestra are, as usual, excellent; and David Robertson conducts the music presumably the way Mr Muhly wants it. The recording comes with a complete English libretto.
