Notes & Reviews:

To commemorate the 80th birthday of Russian composer Alfred Schnittke (1934-98) the Russian pianist Denys Proshayev made a new recording, with the St. Petersburg String Soloists and Alexander Dmitriev, of Schnittke's Concerto for Piano & Strings, the 5 Aphorisms for piano solo, and the Gogol Suite for piano 4-hands, with Nadia Mokhtari. Schnittke's music, highly controversial, drew inspiration from widely diverse sources and styles, alternating the banal with the sublime, the spiritual with the bizarre.

American Record Guide, March/April 2015
5 Aphorisms were written in 1990, as Schnittke continued recovering from his battles with stroke. Thoroughly expressionist in the traditional modernist sense, the pieces are filled with gloom, misery, and probably fear. The last piece is marked Grave and is thoroughly funereal. The much earlier Piano Concerto 3 (1979) is expressing the personal and political problems associated with Soviet repression (he refused participation in the Composers Union one year later). In extreme contrast, the Gogol Suite (1978) is an arrangement for two pianos of incidental music written for a revue on "motives" by Gogol. Much of this music is available elsewhere. Check indexes.
