Notes & Reviews:

Brilliant Classics follow-up to Canto Ostinato XL, Canto Ostinato XXL, brings a new perspective to Simeon ten Holt's minimalist composition by adding a Romantic organ to the work's original scoring for four pianos - a combination never before attempted. Recorded over the course of just one day, this four disc, four-hour arrangement slows the tempo down a little, in order to accommodate the magnificent acoustics of the Muziekgebouw Eindhoven. Joining organist Aaart Bergwerff and Sandra and Jeroen van Veen are acclaimed piano duo Elizabeth and Marcel Bergmann.

American Record Guide, March/April 2015
I began listening to this performance of Canto Ostinato, described as the longest ever, with a certain skepticism. I needn't have worried. The notation of the score, which I consulted briefly while listening, admits a great variety of variants, and the performers - obviously steeped in the piece's mysteries - are invited to make full use of them. Performers also contribute a great deal toward the shape of the piece by deciding on the number of repetitions, the kind of articulation, the volume, and so on. The greater length suits the piece, too, because Ten Holt describes performances of it as more of a ritual than a concert.
