Notes & Reviews:

Rachmaninov's symphonies and piano concertos - with their expansive, surging melodies, their rich colors and haunting air of melancholy - seem to capture the very essence of the Russian soul. The composer was exiled from his homeland, but for these recordings - made after Leningrad had once again become St. Petersburg - conductor Maris Jansons returned to the orchestra with which he had first learned his craft.
