Notes & Reviews:

BBC Music Magazine, February 2015
On the face of it, these are rather 'straight' readings, meticulously fingered and judiciously paced; Kozhukin never rushes detail or stabs at the keyboard for emphasis...Yet his apparent restraint discloses an intent thoughtfulness and a subtlety of dynamic shading through which the highly contrasted characters of Haydn's various movements emerge all the more compellingly.

For his second Onyx release, pianist Denis Kozhukhin turns to Joseph Haydn. Haydn's piano sonatas have been unjustly neglected and yet they contain some of his most forward looking music. In the selection here, the worlds of gallant classical style rub shoulders with sturm und drang, and listeners can appreciate the influence Haydn clearly had upon his wayward and headstrong young pupil Beethoven.

Classical Music, January 2015
Kozhukhin proves himself an incisive and thoughtful interpreter of Haydn. His grace, lyrical fluency and sensitivity to every aspect of these works is impressive, humour never overdone, with a lithe energy throughout.

Gramophone Magazine, January 2015
[Kozhukhin] is really at his best in Hob.XVI/24 (No. 39), spaciously expressive in the Allegro first movement, melancholy in the Baroque-type Adagio and pointedly rhythmic in the final Presto.

American Record Guide, January/February 2015
Kozhukhin favors tonal beauty, occasional expressive restraint, a variety of articulation surprising for a pianist, and interesting shapes for phrasing and dynamic contrast. His gifts work best in Sonata 24 (in D), where a sensitive, restrained approach fits the music. The expressive profile is fine. Sonata 23:I could be more incisive, but II is very beautiful. III has the same excellent nuances of phrasing as in 49:III. Kozhukhin is a lovely pianist; if you like your Haydn with a little restraint, he'll be perfect for you.

International Record Review, March 2015
Exquisitely refined playing...about as close to the perfect ideal in this music as it is possible to imagine...A defining moment in Classical pianism.
