Notes & Reviews:
Laurence Cummings leads the FestspielOrchester Göttingen and a cast of superb soloists in a performance of Handel's opera Faramondo. The work was first performed in London in 1738. There were only eight performances and it was never revived during the composer's lifetime. The first modern production was in Halle in 1976, and several recordings have been made. Its convoluted plot is a story of revenge, intrigues, love and jealousy, backed by some of Handel's most sublime music.
International Record Review, December 2014
Where have they been hiding Fons? She has a focused, dark-hued voice with the suppleness to transcend the coloratura of such arias as 'Sebben me lusinga' ... Cummings and his orchestra do full justice to the music.
Early Music Review, February 2015
All of the singers are of such a high standard and so pleasing in their renditions, that all must be praised evenly... Definitely one for the collection, and I don't think it will age either - the musicianship will stand the test of time and fashion.
BBC Music Magazine, January 2015
This performance under Laurence Cummings is artfully prepared and brilliantly detailed...Cummings's orchestra is alert and assured, witha well-fed bass-line and elegant violins...Fons delivers a stunning 'Si tornero a morir' and leads an almost ideal cast of young singers.
Early Music Today, December 2014
Mezzo-soprano Emily Fons delivers... with thrilling bravura here, and Cummings' principals sing well.
American Record Guide, January/February 2015
Composed in late 1737 and premiered the following January, Faramondo ushered in the very last phase of Handel's commitment to Italian opera for London. Using a libretto by the long-admired poet Apostolo Zeno. There is fine music from Handel's own imagination, too.
