Notes & Reviews:

Continuing their Rossini series, Antonio Pappano and the Rome-based Orchestra dell'Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia follow three substantial works with seven operatic overtures and an enchanting chamber-scale 'Andante e tema con variazioni'. The two most famous pieces are the hyperactive overture to the comic Il barbiere di Siviglia and the miniature tone poem that precedes Guillaume Tell (William Tell). Also included are overtures to La Cenerentola, Semiramide, and operas that remain rarities - the epic Le Siège de Corinthe, La scala di seta and Il signor Bruschino.

Financial Times, 31st October 2014
The Orchestra dell'Accademia at their most concentrated, every eye fixed on the conductor, every muscle tensed.

Gramophone Magazine, November 2014
The one rarity here is the overture to Le siège de Corinthe...Pappano's performance is vivid but a good deal more humane [than Toscanini's].

MusicWeb International, 4th December 2014
There is a lot of fun to be had on this disc and often more than that...Under Pappano, the Santa Cecilians have already shown how well they can play Rossini's music and they repeatedly show that again on this disc. There is a beautiful lightness to the strings in La Scala di Seta, as they scamper all over both the introduction and the main theme.

Sunday Times, 16th November 2014
Pappano pays special tribute to the witty wind soloists Rossini favours so lavishly in the famous intros to The Silken Ladder, The Barber of Seville and La Cenerentola.

The Telegraph, 27th October 2014
The famous crescendos that are a firm fingerprint of these overtures bristle with anticipation of a radiant climax, which duly arrives, but there is also finesse and musical discretion aplenty in the way Pappano shapes the lines and animates the textures. A lovely disc.
