Notes & Reviews:

Among the musical treasures in the British Library is a sumptuous choirbook prepared for Henry VIII and Catherine of Aragon. It was produced by Petrus Alamire, who not only headed one of the finest musical scriptoriums of the age but acted as a spy for Henry against Plantagenet claimant to the English throne Richard de la Pole. Gifted to the royal couple c. 1516 it contains 34 motets, many unique to this manuscript, and includes masterworks by leading French and Franco-Flemish composers of the age including Josquin Desprez, Jean Mouton, Heinrich Isaac, Antoine de Fevin, and Pierre de la Rue.

American Record Guide, March/April 2015
The performances here are outstanding. The vocal ensemble Alamire was founded in 2005 by David Skinner and two of his colleagues. The claim is amply justified by these performances with flawless ensemble, intonation, and blend. The singers convincingly convey the wide range of expressive character in these motets. The expression grows from within the phrases, and the singers clearly know how those phrases were meant to unfold. The ensemble for this recording consists of 15 singers. David Skinner is a fellow of Sidney Sussex College, Cambridge, where he directs the chapel choir and is a lecturer in the university's Faculty of Music.
