Pierre Boulez: The Complete Columbia Album Collection - Berlioz, Berg, Bartok, Schoenberg, Berio, Beethoven, Ravel et al. / New York PO; Boulez et al.

Notes & Reviews:

Sony Classical is proud to release Pierre Boulez - The Complete Columbia Album Collection, an unprecedented reissue of the recordings made by the legendary conductor for CBS / Columbia. It is the first time all of these recordings have been released as a single box set that features all of the original artwork and a hard cover bound book.

One of the towering figures of modern music, Pierre Boulez began his career in 1958 in Germany. His remarkable achievements in Europe brought him to the attention of George Szell who invited him to make his US debut in 1965 conducting the Cleveland Orchestra. Boulez went on to serve as principle guest conductor and musical advisor from 1967 to 1972. In 1971 he became the chief conductor of the BBC Symphony Orchestra in London and the same year he succeeded Leonard Bernstein as music director of the New York Philharmonic, holding that illustrious post until 1977. With these leading orchestras, Boulez - who began his conducting career in order to do justice to his own challenging works - quickly garnered the reputation of a peerless interpreter of Berlioz and Wagner; Debussy and Ravel; Schoenberg, Berg and Webern; Bartók and Stravinsky; Messiaen, Varèse and Carter. Early on, CBS /Columbia began documenting that reputation with the benchmark recordings now being brought together in this single box set release.
