Notes & Reviews:

BBC Music Magazine, January 2015
Christophers sees Monteverdi attempting here to 'speak through singing'...and this, he tells us, allows the conductor 'the most amazing licence' - of accentuation, speed and declamation. Hence the character accounts of Laudate pueri and Dixit Dominus, where pauses are ignored or inserted and the relative speeds between their duple and triple sections are rarely the same.

Financial Times, 15th November 2014
Exemplary all-round standards are the draw here, whether solo voices, choir or instruments.

Monteverdi's Vespers of 1610 is quite simply one of the greatest works of sacred music ever written, without doubt the most varied and inspired before Handel and Bach began composing their oratorios and passions. Its variety alone makes it unique, from thrilling psalm settings with virtuosic writing for both multi-part choir and instrumentalists, to exotic and sensual settings of texts from the Song of Songs for solo voices. Every movement is full of luscious harmonies, drama, and evocative musical language.

International Record Review
There is a sense of deep familiarity with the music in this recording, a feeling of easiness with Monteverdi's harmonic and, especially, rhythmic vocabulary that lends a tripping lightness to the performances.

So, this adds up to a second slip into eccentricity for Christophers, with respect to this epochal collection. The positive aspects of the conductor's choral style are much in evidence: beautiful ensemble singing and crisp precision. The soloists, drawn from the choir of 22 mixed voices. The instrumental group of 18, which he uses with a bit of freedom, plays splendidly.
