Notes & Reviews:

Shostakovich's Sixth Symphony is often overlooked between the famous heroic Fifth and the overwhelming wartime statements of the Seventh and Eighth. This profoundly personal work juxtaposes deeply felt sorrow in the slow first movement with hollow cheer in the latter two - an ironic response to official demands for lightness, cheerfulness and optimism. The Fourteenth, even less traditional in conception, is a haunting and affecting song-cycle for two voices and chamber orchestra on poems unified by the theme of mortality. Vladimir Jurowski led the LPO in these 2013 and 2006 live recordings.

American Record Guide, March/April 2015
That strange opening Largo of the Sixth Symphony starts out well. I reviewed the Stuttgart Radio Symphony under Andrey Boreyko last year (Hanssler 93303, Jan/Feb 2014); he takes two full minutes longer than Jurowski, clocking in at 19:16, and the effect is remarkable. The 14th is quite good - energetic to the point of fury in the fast sections and grim in the slow movements. The baritone is solid. Bernstein's 14 on Sony is recommended, and Rostropovich's classic with Reshetin and Vishnevskaya is unbeatable; it can be found second-hand on Russian Disc or in the box set of all the symphonies (Warner 64177, Sept/Oct 2011). Notes are in English with transliterated texts and translations.
