Notes & Reviews:

The viola does not play a leading role in the stereotyped notions of Hungarian music. Nor is the viola found in the "Gypsy music" still diligently practiced for tourists, in which violin and double bass are the leading instruments. The picture is not very different in classical music. Acting as a slight but necessary corrective, this disc of Hungarian viola music from composers including Liszt, Ferenc Farkas and Antal Dorati features Máté Szucs, current first Principal Violist of the Berliner Philharmoniker who appears in concert throughout Europe as a soloist and chamber-music player.

American Record Guide, March/April 2015
Antal Dorati (1906-88) is familiar as a conductor. Before hearing his Adagio, a piece he wrote the year before he died, I had no idea he was such a fine composer. Erzebet Sz÷nyi studied at the Franz Liszt Academy in Budapest. Laszlo Weiner (1916-1944) studied with Kodaly before he was sent to the Lukov labor camp in Slovakia in 1943. This lovely and whimsical sonata from around 1939 is one of the few of his works we have. Ferenc Farkas (1905-2000), who taught Ligeti and Kurtag at the Budapest Academy of music, was born in 1905 in Nagykanizsa. Franz Liszt wrote his 'Romance OubliTe' in 1880 for Herman Ritter to play on his huge "viola alta". Mate Szncs, the principal violist of the Berlin Philharmonic, plays it on a conventional viola. All the music is superb - as is the playing.
