Christian Ludwig Boxberg (1670-1729): Sardanapulus, opera / Jan Kobow, Rinnat Moriah, Theodora Baka, Franz Vitzthum, Markus Flaig

Notes & Reviews:

Christian Ludwig Boxberg (1670-1729) is one of the "lost" generation of composers between the two "poles" of German Baroque music, Schu¨tz and Bach, who were produced in such great numbers in Baroque-era Central Germany. His opera Sardanapalus (1698) is a remarkable synthesis of various European national styles; alongside the German influences, those from French and Italian opera are unmistakable, marking the beginning of that "mixed taste" compositional style that J. J. Quantz designated, decades later, as typical of German masters Telemann, Bach, Ha¨ndel and Graun.
