Hommage a Weber - Music for piano 4-hands by Weber, Godowsky and Moscheles / Lucia Huang and Sebastian Euler, pianos

Notes & Reviews:

With some unusual takes on the standard repertoire already in their catalogue, the Duo D'Accord (pianists Lucia Huang and Sebastian Euler) set out to do something very special: an "Hommage à Weber" - as the title says. It not only contains the complete works for piano duet but also arrangements of some opera overtures and a special adaptation of the 2nd piano concerto for piano four hands by Weber's friend and biographer Friedrich Wilhelm Jähns: a first recording and a masterstroke of artistic curiosity. Two Weber tribute encores by Ignaz Moscheles and Leopold Godowsky also appear.

American Record Guide, March/April 2015
Duo d'Accord (Lucia Huang and Sebastian Euler) has come my way several times in the past, and each disc was very favorably reviewed. The pianists supply exceptionally detailed notes about their research into this pivotal composer. Weber composed romantic music as early as 1812 (Symphony 1 and Piano Concerto 2), a time still generally considered part of the classical period. Liszt made a knuckle-busting solo piano arrangement of the Overture in 1846, and here we get Duo d'Accord's own two-piano arrangement of this great work. They make much more of the music and far less of the virtuosity required to play all the notes. The other pieces here are transcriptions and paraphrases. Besides the flashy, virtuosic Godowsky Paraphrase for two pianos, the extended Moscheles Grand Duo, and their own Freischntz arrangement, Duo d'Accord include two Overtures (Abu Hassan and Silvana) arranged for duet by Richard Kleinmichel. Pianism, interpretation, booklet notes, and sound quality are all top notch here; and the music is very good and enjoyable. It is owing to Duo d'Accord's efforts that I have enriched my knowledge of Weber.
