Notes & Reviews:

Olo non Solo, the debut Ravello release of the Teatro dell'Opera di Roma's bass clarinetist Sauro Berti, presents contemporary works for solo bass clarinet as well as for traditional and unusual duos, including with percussion, saxophone, narration and electronics. Reconciling Berti's passions for classical and jazz music, pieces such as Blue Buk and Cosmic Turtles Sidekick are inspired by swing and improvisation while Due Pezzi Brasiliani uses two distinctive Brazilian rhythms, baiao and choro. Spasm, featuring electronic accompaniment, stretches the limits of his bass clarinet.

American Record Guide, March/April 2015
Finding great vocal programs that challenge the performers and the listener with new, thought-provoking material is extremely difficult. The discs I get often offer something in roughly two camps: quaint settings of esoteric poems nobody has ever heard or extravagant, adventurous settings of Elizabethan sonnets or something similar. It is only partly because of this strange duality that the program performed by the Vocal Constructivists is remarkable. The other reasons are the strength of the performances and the variety of material. 'Nevrazumitelny' by Michael Parsons is a sung poem with chromatic motives and some other sounds. Mark Applebaum's Medium is an exercise in ascribing meaning, deciphering graphic notation, and rigorously adhering to rules. His graphic scores are beautiful creations, and Medium is a enjoyable journey through interpretation and imaginative vocalizations. 'Sound Patterns' by Pauline Oliveros, in contrast, is precise in its notations. The sounds are specific phonemic clusters, percussive licks and pops, hums, sounds through clenched teeth, and modulated notes. 'Sound Patterns' concentrates on the array of musical possibilities of the mouth and throat.
