Notes & Reviews:

On his debut solo Navona Records release, The Real Beeler, prolific composer Alan Beeler presents his refined and distinguishable orchestral voice, exploring various harmonic and melodic forms and structures as well as the serial techniques of the Second Viennese School. As Beeler himself remarks about his compositional style, "I write music that pleases me.... Form and technique are useless unless they produce a pleasing result." His symphonic music carries an air of mystery and abstraction, yet remains expressive, leaving space for the listener to take his or her own journey.

American Record Guide, January/February 2015
Alan Beeler's marimba music is far different from the repertoire performed by Vartan. The Marimba Concerto in Sixths sounds like an excerpt from a technical etudes book with a few rolls and passing tones. The consistent use of steady pacing and uniformity of figures in I, however, kept my interest. With a brushed snare and hi-hat behind it, the clarinet gently swings through tone rows. The concerto has a flowing aspect to it that persists across all three movements. This leaves them sounding quite similar and the duple-duple-triple figures dominate all. Beeler's release also includes two symphonies, and both sound right out of the Second Viennese School.
