Notes & Reviews:

On this disc, Prélude a` l’apres-midi d’un faune – possibly Claude Debussy’s most popular work for orchestra – is framed by two of his greatest achievements in the medium, La Mer and Images pour orchestre. The release combines new recordings by Singapore Symphony Orchestra and Lan Shui with the team’s acclaimed performance of La Mer, first released in 2007. The reviewer in American Record Guide called it ‘the most astounding, effective, and beautiful recording of La Mer I have ever heard’ and BBC Music Magazine described it as ‘an unequivocally world-class performance’.

Gramophone Magazine, December 2014
This new version fits snugly into an all-Debussy programme, revealing as it does a genuine feel for the music's fluidity of pulse and shading together with its mix of mysterious mists and gusty surges. The atmosphere is well conjured up, the palette of instrumental colours aptly deployed...there is plenty of character to these stylistically astute Singapore performances.

American Record Guide, January/February 2015
Lan Shui's approach to these works employs slow tempos, refinement, clean lines, and a great deal of control. The performances rarely let go emotionally. Notes are buffed to a shine. The most interesting is Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun. Most performances I have encountered produce a sweet, lush, or rather airy ambience. The are all beautiful in one way or the other Images also takes some getting used to. Lines are clean in 'Gigues', and Shui plays up the contrast of its two moods. The rhythms in the fast section are so clean that it is easy to pick up a suggestion of 'Fetes' from Nocturnes. This La Mer entered the catalog a few years ago on a CD called Seascapes. It follows Faun in the program and sounds almost like a continuation.
