Notes & Reviews:

This new recording features two lesser known pianistic masterworks by the young Schumann: the F minor Piano Sonata, also know as “Concerto without orchestra” in which the classical sonata form is infused with Schumann’s unique romantic outpourings, and the Humoreske, the last of his piano cycles in which Schumann’s alter egos Florestan and Eusebius (the fiery/passionate and the dreamy/intimate) make their presence. Young Italian pianist Vincenzo Maltempo attracted worldwide attention with his staggering recordings of piano works by Alkan, its three volumes (issued on Piano Classics) collected numerous 5 star reviews in the musical press: Guardian (“exhilarating, a real revelation!”), Diapason, Gramophone, Piano News. This new recording shows a sensitivity and close affinity for the musical world of Schumann. In a quasi improvisatory style he captures the essence of the idiom of free association, impulsiveness, tenderness and passion.

American Record Guide, March/April 2015
The sonata is presented in its four-movement version with no attempt to give us the second scherzo, as some have done. This is fine, and should present no problem for most listeners. What we have is a thrilling performance, with proof positive that this Alkan specialist has some of Schumann's blood running through his veins as well. For all his virtuoso abilities, Maltempo clearly has the mind of a poet and does not in the least slight the more reflective and lyrical aspects of what he plays. Humoreske has become one of my favorite Schumann works. It was written in an astonishingly short period of of eight days in March 1839. Despite the title, Schumann considered it the most melancholy of his works.
