The eight songs (padded with two instrumentals: "Rollin' In My Sweet Baby's Arms" and "Dixieland For Me," credited to The Jones Boys) collected on LIFE TURNED HER THAT WAY span most of George Jones' long and brilliant career. Jones, possibly the greatest male singer in country music history, has an inimitable style, somehow harkening back to Jimmie Rodgers, Hank Williams and Lefty Frizell and also remaining indisputably his own, in large part through an almost jazz-like use of blue notes. Jones' eight vocal performances here, from the quiet heartbreak of the title track through the good-humored swagger of "Brothers In A Bottle" to the tender sentiment of "Talk To Me Lonesome Heart," are typically masterful. The CD's only drawback is that it's not twice as long.
