Notes & Reviews:

Florian Boesch’s previous Onyx discs of Schubert songs have been met with the highest praise from around the world. To complete his survey of the Schubert song cycles, Boesch presents an equally compelling reading of Schwanengesang, once again accompanied by the superb pianist Malcolm Martineau. Worthy of note, Boesch excludes the song Die Taubenpost, which was added to the cycle by the publisher, not by Schubert. This recording also features five Goethe settings dating from 1815-1821.

The young Austrian baritone...is one of the current It boys of German Lieder...Boesch may not have the most alluring of contemporary baritone sounds, but his savour of the text and thoughtful, undemonstrative style bring their own rewards. Martineau's playing could hardly be bettered.

Classical Music
Boesch perfectly captures the resigned strength of the late masterpieces.

[Boesch] has a very wide dynamic range at his disposal which he controls expertly while his palette of vocal colouring is wide ranging and applied with perception. Clearly he has established a formidable partnership with Malcolm Martineau...Here is an extremely accomplished and perceptive Schubertian.

International Record Review, March 2015
Boesch is a wonderful Schubert singer...the range of his full, rounded bass-baritone voice, always in tune, is remarkable.

American Record Guide, March/April 2015
Here is a mostly excellent recording of the Schwanengesang and Schubert's Goethe settings. Boesch's singing is rich and sensitive; his lower register is colorful and penetrating. Martineau plays with his usual golden touch. I appreciate the interesting programming here, too: the interspersing of the Schwanengesang songs with the Goethe settings, 'Prometheus', the three 'GesSnge Des Harfners', and 'Grenzen der Menschheit', as well as a new order of the Heine settings that ends the group with 'Der Atlas'. A worthwhile addition to your Schubert library. Notes, texts, and translations.
