Notes & Reviews:

Respighi’s Sonata in B minor was completed a year after The Fountains of Rome had brought him international renown. A work of considerable dimensions and scope, it combines expressive intensity with techniques grounded in early Italian music. Like Respighi, Pizzetti, Casella, Malipiero and others, Riccardo Pick-Mangiagalli belonged to the ‘generation of the 1880s’, which played such a key role in the resurgence of Italian instrumental music. His early Sonata, notable for its concise ideas and attractive melodies, and the three short pieces on this album, comprise the complete works for violin and piano of an undeservedly neglected composer. Volume 1 of this two-disc series can be heard on Naxos 8.573129.

BBC Music Magazine, Christmas 2014
A fine performance of the Respighi, sensitive to its brooding soundworld, is invaluably coupled with Pick-Mangiagalli's more tautly argued Sonata.

American Record Guide, March/April 2015
This is the second volume of Berencoli and Bianchi's works of Respighi for violin and piano. I enjoyed their first volume very much (J/A 2014) and am just as impressed with this reading of Respighi's well-known 1917 Sonata. Pick-Mangiagalli's sonata from 1906 is a serious piece that is loaded with color. It predates the Respighi by 11 years and seems to draw on Franck as a model to write a work for violin and piano that demands as much (or more) from the pianist as it does from the violinist. It is a joy to be introduced to Pick-Mangiagalli and these little-known works, recorded here for the first time, by such wonderful musicians.
