The title Pocos Años, Muchos Daños translates into English as "Few Years, Lots of Damage," and this collection of non-LP single and EP sides from Spanish garage punk titans Davila 666 confirms that description is apt -- this collection of odds and ends proves the band has covered lots of ground in its brief lifetime. Unlike a lot of folks in the garage punk scene these days, Davila 666 aren't defined by a single melodic template, and there's as much clever, ear-catching pop here as wailing fuzztone blare. The band sounds tight, enthusiastic, and muscular on every cut, from the bubblegummy "Pingorocha y la Diva Rockera" and the Motown-influenced "Ohhh" to the Ramones-esque "Me Va Muy Mal" and the psych-dosed boogie of "Alverez." Davila 666 even deliver on an español cover of Blondie's "Hanging on the Telephone," and "Borrandos el Negro" is a raw but effective translation of the Rolling Stones' "She's a Rainbow." Even when these guys go for a traditional snot-and-fuzzy-guitars approach on "Pa Que Vives," they make it sound fresh and fill it up with their own personality. Davila 666 are the rare band that embodies what is best about a genre and transcend it at the same time, and while their two proper albums (2008's Davila 666 and 2011's Tan Bajo) have a more unified sound, Pocos Años, Muchos Daños works largely because it's all over the place, offering a taste of their many rock & roll obsessions, and they respectably hit their target at every turn. If you haven't treated yourself to the rough-hewn satisfactions of Davila 666, Pocos Años, Muchos Daños is an excellent way to start. ~ Mark Deming
