Notes & Reviews:

This live LPO recording from London’s Southbank Centre marks the first release featuring the newly refurbished Harrison and Harrison Royal Festival Hall organ. From the first earth-shattering chord of the Poulenc to the thrilling finale of the Saint-Saens Organ Symphony, it was clear that this is an instrument of hugely impressive proportions. Among organist James O’Donnell’s numerous awards and honors for his recordings are the Gramophone Award for ‘Record of the Year’ in 1998 for his recording of Masses by Martin and Pizzetti for Hyperion.

American Record Guide, March/April 2015
Very few recordings have coupled the Saint-Saens and the Poulenc. There are moments here where I wish the organ were stronger - quiet moments. In the big moments it is glorious. And it is amazing how long Nezet-Seguin holds the final chord! Of course, there is also an EMI DuruflT French recording of the Saint-Saens, and I have never tired of it or thought it outshone by anything since. It is easy to find a good organ in recordings of these pieces; it is not so easy to find an orchestra that sounds this good and holds its own with the organ. The orchestra is never distant or dull, but the organ is brilliant and never repressed. In other words, the balances are ideal. If you like this music this is worth hearing.
