Conductor Ensemble Composer

Notes & Reviews:

The German conductor Hans Knappertsbusch and the Bayreuth Wagner Festival were nearly synonymous propositions in their respective performative and historical grandeur by the 1950’s, an era also looked back on from the present as a golden age of Wagnerian singing. Furthering these propositions is the splendid Ring cycle of 1957, which hosted Knappertsbusch and a cast of incredible singers including Hans Hotter, Birgit Nilsson, Astrid Varnay, Ramon Vinay and Wolfgang Windgassen, amongst others, spread across these four 24Bit/96kHz re-mastered volumes from Walhall Eternity.

American Record Guide, March/April 2015
I reviewed a Ring cycle from Covent Garden conducted by Kempe and recorded in lthe fall of 1957. This cycle is conducted by Knappertsbusch and was performed a couple of months before the Kempe. Knappertsbusch conducted The Ring at postwar Bayreuth in four seasons: 1951, 1956, 1957, and 1958. We have recordings of Gotterdammerung from 1951 (a justly famous Testament recording) and of the whole cycle from 1956 (Melodram; Music & Arts; and a better and more expensive Orfeo) from 1957 (this recording) and from 1958 (Walhall; other labels).
