Notes & Reviews:

After the success of Brass (RCO 07002), the first CD of the Brass of the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra comes, seven years hence, Brass Too from RCO Live. The pun in the title also points to the idea behind this album: the works of Shostakovich and Piazzolla were not originally written for brass, but are arranged for them here. And although Hindemith is not known as a composer of brass music he has written for this family of instruments. The new work by RCO house composer Detlev Glanert proves that brass can sound completely different and unexpected.

American Record Guide, March/April 2015
This album is so good, so thrilling, such a fantastic example of how great a brass ensemble can sound. The program opens with movie music - five movements from Shostakovich's Gadfly Suite (1955). This all-brass setting of the Overture is much more stirring and impressive than the orchestral one - at least, as played by these terrific players. 'Barrel-Organ Waltz' is simple and intimate, rather like a music-box piece. 'Galop' has crisp double-tonguing and big dynamic contrasts. This is great Shostakovich. Detlev Glanert (b 1960) is one of this orchestra's resident composers. His little 'Concertgeblaas' (Concert Blaring) is a jazz-infused bit of wit. It is followed by one of the great original works for large brass ensemble, Henri Tomasi's Fanfares Liturgiques (1947). My deep appreciation for this profound, moving, and amazing work is reawakened every time I hear it. The piece is a knockout, and this performance is simply fantastic. It makes me proud to be a brass player and glad to be alive. It is one of the best things I've heard in 25 years of reviewing. The next selection takes us on a sonic trip to Argentina. Steven Verhelst's setting of several selections from Astor Piazzolla's opera Maria de Buenos Aires is marked by lovely trombone playing by Jorgen van Rijen in 'Yo Soi Maria' and virtuoso playing by all in 'Fuga y Misterio'. The album ends with Hindemith's twomovement, 16-minute Konzertmusik for brass and strings, one of the works composed for the Boston Symphony's 50th anniversary season in 1931.
