One seldom finds complete recordings of Latin Masses, readings and all. Aside from the Credo and the hymn 'Adoro te Devote', which are beautifully melodic, the readings are the wordiest items in the Mass. As Father Wallner says, "the calm melodies allow both singers and listeners to plunge into the sphere of the mystery of God". The second half of the program is dominated by Guillaume Dufay's Sine Nomine Mass and the fauxbourdon (chordal) setting of 'Ave Maris Stella', beautifully performed by Ensemble Gotica. They show complete command of the difficult counterpoint in the Mass, and the rich sonorities of the hymn sound gorgeous. Reverberation helps to smooth over rhythmic complexity.
