Notes & Reviews:

John Wilson and his handpicked orchestra have established a well-earned reputation as the modern interpreters of the Hollywood musical. Since signing an exclusive contract with EMI Classics in early 2011, the orchestra has regularly garnered rave reviews for their live performances at the BBC Proms and around the UK. This recording is the next chapter in the John Wilson Orchestra tale, as they venture into the American songbook with iconic songs by the genre-defining composer Cole Porter. The fifteen tracks encompass hit songs and music from Kiss Me Kate, High Society, Can-Can, Silk Stockings and many more. "As well as a conductor, Wilson is something of a musical detective. Over the past few years, he has been instrumental in recovering the original scores of many classic musicals, including High Society, Singin' in the Rain and An American in Paris. With his orchestra... he produces performances of these lost scores of such clarity and feeling that you are left wondering how such music could ever have been allowed to get lost in the first place." John Wilson and his hand-picked singers and eponymous orchestra present a sparkling collection of the songs of Cole Porter, featured in such Hollywood classics as Kiss Me, Kate; High Society; Can-Can; Silk Stockings; and other films from the golden age of musicals. With vocalists Anna-Jane Casey, Kim Criswell, Matthew Ford, Sarah Fox, and Richard Morrison, backed by the Maida Vale Singers, Wilson aims to re-create the songs as they were originally heard, in many cases using reconstructions of the music by himself, Andrew Cottee, and Paul Campbell, as well as existing arrangements. Not only is this an entertaining album of Porter's most memorable songs, offered in a spirit of fun, but it is a valuable act of preservation, because many of the original scores and parts have been lost. Thanks to Wilson and his colleagues, these performances have the vintage appeal and wit of the movie versions, as well as the vitality and personalities of the present artists. ~ Blair Sanderson
