"We were called Pearls Before Swine," violinist George Kentros said of this Stockholm-based group, "But we found out there was another group with this name so we changed it slightly." Are you experienced, anyone? Although its name, even the second generation one, seems well-worn, the idea of this ensemble is actually incredibly fresh. It is something in the nature of a classical chamber ensemble, performing pieces written specifically for it that apparently have otherwise gone unperformed, by a variety of mostly modern Scandanavian composers. Whether the group is planning to perform only shortish pieces averaging about five minutes is not known, but this is the case here and it is quite effective in the end. For one thing, it means that if a particular composition is boring, stuffy, or stilted, as some of them certainly are, then it isn't too long until there's a respite. The players themselves work very well together and the instrumental combinations are used to great effect, which can't always be said for additional vocal effects and general horsing around that is a bit too stuffy to really be funny. Pianist Marten Landstrom brings a proper touch to almost every piece. There are also three even shorter tracks that seem to be extemporized by the group itself. ~ Eugene Chadbourne
