Album Remarks & Appraisals:

The feature film Rosewater marks the screenwriting and directorial debut of The Daily Show host Jon Stewart. A true story, the film is based on the New York Times best-selling memoir Then They Came for Me: A Family’s Story of Love, Captivity, and Survival, written by BBC journalist Maziar Bahari. It follows the story of Bahari’s imprisonment in Tehran in 2009 and his interrogation at the hands of a man he knew only as Rosewater. Accused of espionage while covering Iran’s elections for the BBC, Bahari was stunned to find among the government’s supposedly incriminating evidence personal photos from dinner parties, his Facebook posts, and his appearance in a segment on The Daily Show. This soundtrack recording features an original score by Howard Shore, coupled with tracks by Leonard Cohen and Persian musicians Mahdyar Aghajani and 25 Band.

Rosewater is a very interesting 2014 film written and directed by Jon Stewart. The story involves the imprisonment of a US journalist in Iran accused of being a spy while covering the 2009 Iranian elections. The music accompanying the action is by award-winning composer Howard Shore. Having watched and listened to several film scores composed by Shore I noted how his music is always in service to the director's needs.

If you enjoyed both the film and the score, or admire all of Shore's music then buy the recording.

Composer Howard Shore (Lord of the Rings, The Hobbit) brings an exotic Persian flavor to his original score for the 2014 political drama Rosewater. Blending ancient sounds and instrumentation with modern orchestral flourishes and electronics, the music dances and weaves through nimble rhythm-laden pieces and brooding textural themes to tell the real-life tale of Canadian-Iranian journalist Maziar Bahari who, in 2009, endured 118 days of political imprisonment and interrogation in Iran. Augmenting the score are two tracks by Iranian composer Mahdyar Aghajani, a track by Iranian hip-hop act 25 Band, and a live version of Leonard Cohen's "Dance Me to the End of Love." After the sweeping epics of both the Lord of the Rings and Hobbit trilogies, it's nice to hear Shore dig in to something so stylistically different. ~ Timothy Monger
