Notes & Reviews:

Cuba is music. The first thought might be of the Buena Vista Social Club from the famous film by Wim Wenders, but Cuban music holds much more. The Orquesta Sinfónica Nacional de Cuba, performing under its principal conductor Enrique Pérez Mesa, now for the first time on MDG surveys the incredible variety of the Cuban music tradition, which originated long before the colonial period and above all in the nineteenth century and early twentieth century combined European influences, Caribbean joy of life, and and Afro-American ingredients to form a fascinating and unique idiom.
