Marjorie Lee: Remembering

Album Notes

A loose-knit concept record that explores regret and loss with uncommon poignancy, Remembering boasts a subdued sophistication perfectly matched to Marjorie Lee's heartfelt vocals. Pianist John T. Williams and altoist Ted Nash contribute significantly to the record's haunted atmosphere, with Lee even stepping aside for a few instrumentals -- the material is also impeccably chosen, with torch songs like "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" and "I Let a Song Go Out of My Heart" firmly establishing the record's rich emotional context. Lee is nevertheless the name above the title for good reason, and while not a commanding vocalist in the conventional sense, she's a gifted stylist who fully inhabits the lyrics she sings, creating an unflinching portrait of a heart and soul in freefall. ~ Jason Ankeny
