Guided by Voices: The Electrifying Conclusion [Video]

Album Notes

Guided by Voices had a small regional following in their home state of Ohio until 1994, when their album Bee Thousand clicked with critics and gained enough college radio airplay that the group grew into an underground phenomenon. After ten years as one of America's best-respected indie rock outfits, Guided by Voices leader Robert Pollard announced in mid-2004 that the band was breaking up, with a final tour planned for the end of the year. On December 31, 2004, the group took the stage at the Cabaret Metro in Chicago for a marathon concert that was meant to be GbV's last stand. A film crew was on hand to document their farewell concert, and The Electrifying Conclusion preserves the 63-song show in full, as Pollard and GbV colleagues both past and present joined him to give the band a proper sendoff, complete with a bartender on-stage to serve drinks to the musicians. Selections include "Motor Away," "Teenage FBI," "Watch Me Jumpstart," "Demons Are Real," "Game of Pricks," "I Am a Tree," "Cut-Out Witch," "Glad Girls," "Back to the Lake," "I Am a Scientist," "Don't Stop Now," and many, many more. While The Electrifying Conclusion was meant to document Guided by Voices' final show, Pollard reunited the band in 2010, and they toured and recorded steadily until they announced their second retirement in 2014. ~ Mark Deming
