Notes & Reviews:
Gerre Hancock left an indelible mark on church music and the organ profession in America. Lauded for his skills as an organist, improviser and choir trainer, his contributions as a composer have been overlooked. This 2-CD set provides an introduction and overview of his compositions for organ.
American Record Guide, March/April 2015
This definitive recording was made on the instrument Hancock played for 33 years as Organist at St Thomas, Fifth Avenue, New York. In the words of his wife, Judith, "this recording will remind us of that special style of Gerre Hancock, but it will also allow us to hear the registration of these pieces as Gerre intended them to sound - the uniquely thrilling and beautiful qualities of that instrument - sounds that were so closely associated with Gerre's own playing and composing". Wilson plays with authority, passion, and commitment. His virtuosity and musicianship are on par with the composer's own. One could not ask for better performances. He is joined by his former student, Kevin Kwan, in the duet 'A Fancy for Two' and the stunning Holy Week suite, written for the two organs at St Thomas. Coordination between the two organs is perfect. The booklet contains extensive notes on Hancock's career, the music, and the organs. Also included are photos of Hancock at various stages of his career. The sound is splendid - a marvelous document in every way.
