Notes & Reviews:

"Hymn For The World 2" is a special anthology of liturgical and religiously inspried music that originated in August 1997, at the time of His Holiness Pope John Paul II's visit to Paris. It was an expression of hope for not only worldwide peace but also love among the world's nations and religions. The music is spiritually touching, and the performances are devine.

Notes & Reviews:

A HYMN FOR THE WORLD 2 follows in the footsteps of its successful predecessor with a similar formula. Once again you have Cecilia Bartoli with Myung-Whun Chung and Rome's Santa Cecilia Orchestra and Chorus in a concert of sacred or spiritually inspired music. Tenor Andrea Bocelli returns in a cameo role to sing one number, "I Believe" by French pop composer Eric Levi, while baritone Bryn Terfel comes aboard for the "Libera Me" from the Fauré Requiem.

Bartoli's rich, poised mezzo soprano is a moving presence in four of what might be called spirituality's greatest hits, the "Qui sedes" of Bach's B Minor Mass, the "Laudate Dominum" from Mozart's Solemn Vespers, the Bach/Gounod "Ave Maria" and the "Pie Jesu" from the Fauré Requiem. The larger part of the program is assumed by the Santa Cecilia choristers, in selections ranging from Monteverdi to Bruckner to John Tavener. Though this is a sequel, at no time does it seem to fall into routine. The concert is intelligently planned and performed by artists who sound like they care about the sounds they make.
