Notes & Reviews:
This collection of pieces by Spanish master composer Anton Garcia Abril (b. 1933), composed in 1987, although not a cycle is nonetheless a coherent collection conceived as a didactic "handbook". Vademecum explores the guitar in contemporary terms with a broad range of pieces that exude melodic beauty and demonstrate the composer's deep understanding of the guitar, its sonorities and techniques. No guitarist could be better equipped than Francisco Bernier to present this work on disc, a virtuoso of the guitar whose insight has been deepened through his friendship with the composer.

This is also a real find - two books of works of real beauty, sensitivity, and invention. He has described it as "from the beginning to virtuosity", a progressive works. Like Ponce's or Chopin's Preludes, these works can be performed individually, but (like Chopin's) as a set their architecture is impressive and moving. As in his earlier Naxos recording of Abril's music (listed under Garcia Abril), I find his playing impressive. He is sensitive, tasteful, and colorful - just what this music needs. He is an excellent advocate for it, and I hope it is given wide recognition.
