Notes & Reviews:

The composer Ludwig Thuille (1861-1907) is today almost completely forgotten, which is unfortunate as he is an interesting and surprisingly original composer in his own right. Stylistically Thuille is an unashamed romantic steeped in the German tradition. First and foremost a master of smaller genres, as his Lieder for singer and piano set to music on poems from the German romantic poets indicates. The American soprano Rebecca Broberg, German baritone Martin Schmidt and pianist Rainer Klaas bring audible joy to these delightful works that close a real gap in the repertoire.

American Record Guide, July/August 2015
Klaas plays a short set of variations for solo piano; this is the best part of the entire project. The music is almost catchy and unexpectedly so. Klaas's other solo, 3 Nocturnes, later on Disc 2, is just as lovely. Here again, the sweet, melodic writing in these piano pieces is nothing like the more complicated and harmonically ambitious vocal accompaniments to the songs. Klaas plays with clarity and grace. The performances are OK. She's a pretty good storyteller. She's better in the sprightly, faster songs. Klaas is the best part of the project, consistent and supportive in the songs and confident and expressive in the piano music. Useful notes, texts, and translations.
