- Luc Beauséjour (Harpsichord)
Notes & Reviews:
When Luc Beausejour recorded Book I of the Well-Tempered Clavier [8.557625-26] he was hailed by International Piano for 'his instinct for discovering exactly the right tempo; his playing is so natural'. He turns now to Book II of the Preludes and Fugues in all twenty-four keys, assembled for publication in 1742. A number of the pieces survive in earlier versions from previous decades, which Bach revised or transposed. Together with Book I, this constitutes one of the pinnacles of Western music.

Mr Beausejour's WTC 2 compares very nicely with Peter Watchorn on Musica Omnia (Mar/Apr 2010): mostly moderate to slower tempos and a lyrical, often introspective approach. Watchorn's harpsichord is a little more sonorous than the lighter copies of Hemsch-Blanchet and Vaudry Beausejour plays, and the articulation on the newer release also tends to be a little crisper. Taking full advantage of the numerous variant readings among the many manuscript copies of the WTC, Beausejour makes some interesting. All in all, the performance is a fine one and worth owning at Naxos's price.
