Hexagon All Stars: We Love Hexagon

Album Notes

Spawned from a Japanese game show (Quiz! Hexagon II), the Hexagon All Stars are a collection of baka idol singers, meant as much for comic relief as for musical abilities. After achieving some recognition on the show, a troupe of female singers joined together as the group Pabo, and their male counterparts as Shuchisin. On We Love Hexagon, both groups, both singly and together, belt out some comically simple songs, bouncing happily along with their time filler music expanded to a full-length piece. Interspersed between the songs is some pitter-patter between the various characters on the show. The album starts out with some uber-dramatic music, perfect for a grandiose game show. Soon, the mood turns to simpler songs, folk-influenced pieces largely with an American old-timey feel to them. Their voices are hugely unrefined, adding a bit of an amateur feel to the proceedings, but perhaps also adding a touch of authenticity to the folksy pieces scattered throughout the album. Fans of the show are likely to pick up this album for its character, but not for its musicality. ~ Adam Greenberg
