Nicholas Marshall (b.1942): Songs and Chamber Music / James Gilchrist, tenor; Harvey Davies, harpsichord et al.; Manchester Chamber Ensemble

Notes & Reviews:

This album continues Metier's work in recording contemporary British music by composers working in traditional harmonies and a lyrical style. Nicholas Marshall (b. 1942) has a flair for catching the essence of poetry as shown by the several song cycles on this disc that also features his Concerto for Recorder and String Quartet. Featuring the celebrated tenor James Gilchrist, the album also turns the spotlight on John Turner, the UK's foremost recorder player for whom Mr. Marshall has written much music, and the four members of the Manchester Chamber Ensemble, led by Richard Howarth.

American Record Guide, July/August 2015
Nicholas Marshall was born in 1942 in Plymouth, England. He studied at Fitzwilliam College, Cambridge and the Royal College of Music and had lessons with Sir Lennox Berkeley as well. He has directed music festivals, taught horn at the College of Arts at Darlington, and composed several children's works including two operas. His music is mostly tonal. There's a welcome simplicity to his ideas. The melodies are singable and well crafted. The performances are all polished.
