Notes & Reviews:

Pentatone's Spirit of the American Range celebrates the work of one of the musical giants of the 20th c., Aaron Copland, joined by the work of one of his colleagues, Walter Piston ("an expert American craftsmen" - Copland) and the self-proclaimed bad boy of American music, George Antheil. This release is undeniably a homage to the distinctive musical characterization of American themes in a passionate, modern style. The Oregon Symphony, established more than 100 years ago, has been recognized for its internationally acclaimed music directors, skilled performers and diverse programs. It ranks among the largest orchestras in the USA and is one of the largest arts organizations in the Northwest. As with their two previously released Pentatone titles, the orchestra is led once again by its chief conductor, artistic and music director Carlos Kalmar.

American Record Guide, July/August 2015
Spirit of the American Range is what appears on the cover and spine; keep that in mind if you go looking for it. The Piston is bright in the more exuberant passages. Kalmar and the Oregonians play the 1955 version of this 1927 jumble of ragtime, cakewalks, Latintinged jazz, and a really good romantic string melody. Its perfect brevity makes it enjoyable. It's good with great moments, and the way he handles the reused Fanfare for the Common Man in IV is more interesting to me than the original piece. Kalmar's account is crisp and finely played. Our American Symphonies Overview recommends Slatkin (RCA 60149) and Bernstein's 1966 recording for Sony. Kalmar is good enough to pique my interest, so I'll try the Bernstein at some point. The sonics are decent. The English and German notes are in an easy-to-read font.
