American Record Guide, July/August 2015
In an anthology devoted to a record label the work of the producers necessarily deserves mention. The chief names associated with Decca in the monaural years were Victor Olof (1898-1974) and the young John Culshaw (1924-80). Of their canny business sense, perhaps enough has been said; their taste in music was just as fine and also imaginative. The same can be said for the producers of this anthology, Paul Moseley and Raymond McGill, who have selected from the Decca catalog with great skill: here are the artists one expects to find (many more than I have mentioned) shown to their best advantage in a package that does equal justice to the representative and the rare. They are generous: here is the complete set of Bloch quartets performed by the Grillers and all of the Handel Op. 6 Concerti Grossi performed by Boyd Neel. Readers who remember the original jackets will take particular pleasure in seeing them reproduced on the CD sleeves. The booklet is very well done. I would venture to say that there is something here for everyone - more than enough to justify the shelf space required to store this handsome brick of a box - which is, after all, quite a bargain.
